[“Taste” comes from the Latin taxare (to handle, to assess) – an intensive form of tangere (to touch). It is a term that via vulgar Latin blended with gustare (to taste, to try) to express the act of appraising something by physically handling or even consuming it. In proper Latin, there is the related term sapere, which carries a double meaning of “to taste” and “to be wise.” To taste, in the sense of sapere, is to possess wisdom through tangible experience.]

It’s remarkable that in recent years, and intensely in recent months, the idea of “taste”—“having taste,” “deploying taste,” “taste agents,” “integrating a taste layer,” “taste as a core skill,” “taste as moat”—has become an ultra-present concern in tech circles. Isn’t having taste (wherever one falls along the taste spectrum) an inherent quality of being human?

To be sure, there’s already a lot of writing on this phenomenon: “Tasteslop” by NEMESIS‘s Emily Segal and “Why Tech Bros Are Now Obsessed With Taste” by Kyle Chayka for the New Yorker being among the best takes. The most confounding, in our opinion being Y-Combinator cofounder Paul Graham’s “Taste for Makers” (Feb 2002, but highly cited this year).

There is also “Against Taste,” by Will Manidis, which makes some good points (patrons used to fund art for a higher power or at least public display whereas contemporary collectors tend to buy art for their own private use) but in its theory-of-everything aspiration, feels LLM-ish and contextually ahistorical. So in pure “Content Today” form, we are adding to the pile-on with our own fashionably late, probably factually botched but definitely human, free-associative conversation about taste.

3 KEY POINTS

• What is the difference between a “vibe” and an “aesthetic”? Whereas an aesthetic is recognizable (ex, Frutiger Aero) a vibe is generative. Unlike an aesthetic, a vibe has an internal space (like a world) and can tell you the meaningful relationships among all the things within it. It offers a “way of seeing” that you can apply back to reality.

• Vibes, being ineffable, elude explanation; they exceed full articulation in human language. Yet explanation is being replaced by management in our current media era. Algorithmic and ML-enabled media don’t dissect and analyze vibes, they shepherd, instrumentalize, and replicate them. “The ineffable is being containerized.”

• What is the relationship between humans detecting “same energy” and a model’s processing of a vibe-concept in high-dimensional space? While AI systems are extraordinarily competent vibe operators — they can read, extend, combine, and generate within vibes with great fluency — they may be constitutionally incapable of more. Specifically, they may be incapable of recognizing when a vibe has run its course and it’s time to break with it; incapable of the dialectical move that separated actual art from slop.

To the best of our knowledge Jacqueline Fendt is the first to define “neo-oral” in the way that we’ve come to use it. She is Emeritus Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at ESCP Business School in Paris, a Swiss corporate executive in her 70s, and happens to have a lot to say about vibes. In the 20th century, artists served as an avant-garde. Movements on both the left and right, such as the Bauhaus or Italian Futurism, offered radical new visions for a modernizing society. In the 21st century, we see a similar dynamic emerge through online folk art such as memes and other digital content. Later, we explore the complex references and symbolism throughout the Artificial Angels music video and official album artwork.

* Media theorist Walter J. Ong wrote about a “second orality” in 1971, and then more extensively in his 1982 book Orality and Literacy: The Technologizing of the World, describing it as “a more deliberate and self-conscious orality, based permanently on the use of writing and print.” Fendt cites Ong’s writing but goes much further, showing how the rise of “neo-orality” is fundamentally re-ordering human society: “By Neo-orality, we mean not just a return to oral habits,” Fendt writes, “but a deeper epistemic shift. It privileges immediacy over reflection, presence over argument, and shared emotional resonance over detached verification. Unlike classic orality, which relied on embodied presence, neo-orality travels across screens, memes, and livestreams.”

Daniel Felstead leads the MA Fashion Media & Communications program at the London College of Fashion. Jenn Leung, also a lecturer at the University of Arts London, is a researcher and simulation developer. She has recently published papers on UE interfaces for brain organoids and agent behavior simulation in MIT’s Antikythera journal.

In the US, quality of life means quality of imagined life — past, present, and future shot, reshot, edited, and color-corrected into user-generated reality.

This episode marks the first year of the show. 

“Compared to Volume 1,” Lil Internet writes, “Volume 2 feels closer to a truly functional example of what AI generated music might offer outside of joke songs and the emulation of styles that already exist—it’s also more deranged.” 

“Both, however, are made in the tradition of sample-based, breakbeat driven dance music,” Lil Internet points out, which is to say music that “has always been made using the latest technology and stolen data (uncleared samples).” In this sense, Gencore is part of the natural evolution of what music critic Simon Reynolds named the “hardcore continuum.” Could one even argue that the big AI companies — sampling everything we type, everything we upload, everything we do — follow the same protocol? Perhaps the “hardcore continuum” has expanded from something we listen to into something we are living through.

I sat down with Hasan during his suspension from Twitch. He reads a misleading headline published in the New York Post. Later, we discuss the strategic possibilities of a two party system and explore the paths to socialism in the 21st century.

Often in discussions about machine learning and smartness, AI is presented as the natural path of human progress, an evolutionary – almost biological – development that emerged out of human communication systems and that has the potential to far exceed them. But as Orit argues, these technologies are neither inevitable nor inhuman. Rather they are the result of a particular intersection of neoliberal theory, psychology, and computer science, which generated the economic incentives, political will, and public desire for AI to exist in the specific form we have now.

On this episode, Orit animates the technological imaginary that gave rise to our culture of AI, asking, among other things, how a highly adaptive, machine-learning enabled world changes the terms of political possibility and human revolution.

In this episode, we discuss our shared history in working to develop a new institutionalist critique of emerging technologies and platforms. The vast expansion of platforms during the 2010’s, which now encompass nearly all aspects of social life, represented a blindspot for the political left. To understand how this happened, we need to retrace the history of the 60’s counter-culture and the embrace of libertarian philosophies amongst the New Left.

Since 2011, Mike Pepi, Brad Troemel, myself and other artists and writers have been engaged in an on-going dialogue that explores the ideological roots and design of platform technologies. Mike writes:

“We have been taught that digital technologies are neutral tools, transparent, easily understood, and here to serve us. The reality, is that they are laden with assumptions and collateral consequences – ideology, in other words. And it is this hidden ideology that must be dismantled if we are to harness technology for the fullest expression of our humanity.”

Welcome to New Models Greenroom. On this episode, we speak with filmmaker-actor-sibling-duo Betsey Brown and Peter Vack. Peter starred in Betsey’s 2021 film Actors, and Betsey starred in Peter’s 2024 film www.RachelOrmont.com. Many outside of New York City may have first-encountered Betsey and Peter in the context of Dimes Square, a neighbourhood-turned-meme-turned-parasocial-decentralized-reality-show populated by edgelord podcasters, techno-libertarian venture capitalists, cancelled poets, occultist crypto grifters, zoomer magazine editors, MAGA trans girls and Catholics on ketamine. While this association certainly helped to signal boost Betsey and Peter, it also made it easy to imagine Betsey and Peter as actors—and their films as events—within the theatre, the media spectacle, that is Dimes Square. We, at first, also fell into this trap. But some time passed, and with a friend’s recommendation, and Peter generously sending us a screener, we watched www.RachelOrmont.com, and we realized that, in fact, it is Peter’s film that contains Dimes Square, not the other way around. RachelOrmont.com was disgusting, obscene, even shocking in its unrelenting abjection and we didn’t stop talking about it for a week. So we decided to follow with Betsey’s film Actors, which is currently streamable, and then talked about that for a week. On the surface, both films seem engineered to provoke outrage, to offend, to invite cancellation — yet these are not superficial films. They possess a complexity that comes from channeling the psychoanalytical depths of the internet, making the films distinctly contemporary works — deliberately front-loaded with enough torque to blast through all preconceptions. They stand on their own merit, and deserve to be seen on their own terms. Betsey and Peter join us from New York City to talk about their family, filmmaking, and their films, both how they address a hyper-mediated society and how this society receives them. I’m Lil Internet joined by my co-host Carly Busta; our guests are filmmakers Betsey Brown and Peter Vack. Featuring historical documents, games, films, and other media produced between the 1950s and early 1970s, CYCLOPS requires active engagement and participation. Players are tasked with reconstructing events, deciphering codes, conducting open-source intelligence investigations, and analyzing music, literature, and poetry to move through a work that is part treasure hunt, part unfiction, and part cybersecurity challenge.

The entry point for CYCLOPS is an emulated server containing a series of audio recordings. Some recordings are musical compositions, others are filled with voices reading letters and counting numbers, and others resemble static noise. Each track contains hidden puzzles leading to the interactive narrative on the CYCLOPS mainframe.

Six years ago in February 2018, Julian found himself in Lynchburg, VA, an average American town about 3 hours southwest of Washington, D.C.. He was there on assignment shooting a short documentary for a special crossover project involving two giants in culture sector media.

Back in Berlin, I had just left my job as editor of Texte zur Kunst and, after ten years working for print magazines (and some two decades chasing that dream), made the decision to start New Models, which would examine what was happening to legacy media and how we might collectively adapt to its dissolution.

At the time, things felt profoundly schizophrenic. Most of my peers working in legacy media were living under a vague sense of doom. They could feel that their labor—work that often took the form of 60+ hour weeks for some $40K a year while paying off Ivy League student debt—was subservient to the distribution mechanics of Web 2.0. They were in their 30s and could see that career advancement would require a pivot although it was unclear into what exactly. Meanwhile Vice Media had just been valued at $5.7 billion and, across the river, Condé Nast was settling into its new 1.2 million square feet of office space in the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, One World Trade Center. It didn’t make much economic sense to launch a platform-critical, subscriber-supported, media-theory experiment that year—and perhaps that still isn’t the shrewdest business idea—but it felt like certain death to bank on these old models being long-term viable.

So last week, when Vice Media issued an all staff memo (in language that absolutely could have been written by GPT), explaining that it would be dialing down its operations, laying off the majority of its remaining staff, and ceasing to publish content to its site, it was, abstractly speaking, a relief. Our intuition had been correct: at Vice’s financial peak, its framework was already dead. At the same time, there was a feeling of, what now? Especially as it wasn’t only Vice. Recent months have seen the implosion of Artforum a year after being acquired by publishing conglomerate Penske Media Corp, as well as Condé Nast’s gutting of Pitchfork, folding it into GQ.

When Millennials came of age in the ’00s and early-‘10s, older critics characterized them by their compulsion to publicly document their lives, equating their eagerness to post with their enthusiasm for trendy tattoos (whether antlers, anchors or fingerstaches)—warning that both would would leave them burdened with potentially embarrassing indelible marks.

As those pundits now comfortably retreat to their residences upstate or in the pacific Palisades, bookshelves stacked with the decades of print issues and product collabs they helped to produce and which probably did shape culture in some measurable way, Millennials are arriving in middle age with little material evidence of their life’s work, so much of it having been corrupted as digital back-ends were migrated to new content management systems or abandoned flat out. This is a loss for the journalists but also for those whose stories they were commissioned to tell. 

As legacy media comes undone, what happens to its archives? And when the future tries to understand the cultural impact of legacy media’s demise, how will this time be reconstructed? Already, the remnants of media’s past decade exist scattered across shared Dropboxes, bricked laptops, meta-archiving sites, and personal hard drives, irretrievably distributed like the fuselage of an airplane that exploded mid-flight. And as the last bits of value are wrung from these media brands’ IP, will the name recognition of these former media giants fade, too? Our 17 year old Berlin babysitter had never heard of Vice and couldn’t care less about Vogue. By 2030 what will it mean to say you once made the cover of Artforum or directed a political documentary for Vice? Staring into a sea of blank faces, what will the millennial culture producer do? Perhaps the same as many whose world vanished with time, roll up their sleeve and tell the story of their tattoos.

The work maps out a massive transition in the way we communicate—one that was legible to Flusser in the 1970s, has only accelerated with the proliferation of networked media, and might possibly help us understand—so Munger argues—why everything now feels so weird.

Upon its release, the movie was widely panned and, due to its negative, violent depictions of young black men, the Magic Johnson Theater chain even refused to screen it. But 25 years later, Belly stands as a resonant distillation of its time, both stylistically and sociologically. 

New Models chose to screen Belly for the monthly NM x Trust Kino night in Berlin last week. And for this event, Lil Internet, a video director himself (Beyoncé, “No Angel,” 2013; Diplo, “Express Yourself,” 2012; Iggy Azalea, “Mo Bounce,” 2017), put together some contextualizing thoughts on Belly, which he read IRL before the screening. He has adapted his notes for this NM Short.
